Saujon to Margaux

Our best ever distance day 100km and a head wind 95% of the time. You should see our leg muscles, girls you'll just have to wait and we're only half way there! It was hard today, the wind was so strong at times we felt we were going to be blown backwards. We do have a new name however ..... "The Shower Dodgers". We managed to miss or shelter at the right times today and missed all the showers.

A good interval of the day was a ferry across the Gironde from Blaye to Lamarque. A great respite from the cycling and we were not cheating it went straight across the Gironde. We just wanted to go through the Medoc (and there are less contours than staying on the north or right bank).
I must tell you about our bike store tonight. We are having to stay in a good hotel in Margaux. As there is no choice in Margaux it's good or nothing. After checking into a suite the receptionist said she had a place for the bikes. We took the bikes around to the wine cave under the hotel left them inside to accompany the cases and bottles of Margaux and other great wines, which in the restaurant are up to €1400 a bottle. I hope the bikes enjoy their company.

Otters yes otters, cycling along next to a drainage ditch we saw briefly a family of 4 otters. We've seen lots of wildlife from buzzards to hoo poos (don't know how to spell their name) to water rats to giant alien type flowers half a metre long.

We think we are about half way, I should say we have no mathematical basis for this statement, and are starting a sweepstake on our total distance. You can partake, it's in kilometres and we don't as yet know the final destination. The end point is the station of departure back north from the Med. The person who is furthest from the result which will be an average of Ian and my odometre's (they both give slightly different readings) buy's the champagne. Definitely worth entering as you could end up buying the champagne with no chance of drinking any as it will be drunk by Ian and I in France.
